Marvel Studios surprised its fans by announcing highly demanded Moon Knight as a series on Disney+ with Oscar Isaac playing the title role and Ethan Hawke in an undisclosed important character. The six-episode mini-series will be created by Jeremy Slater and Mohamed Diab will lead the directing team. He will be directing four episodes and the directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have joined to direct the remaining two. Filming began in late April 2021 in Budapest, and will conclude that October, before moving to Atlanta, Georgia. Filming was also expected to occur in the United Kingdom.
In an exclusive interview with THR, Mohamed Diab revealed his experience in landing the gig and what fans can expect from the series.
“Thank God, I hit the jackpot! This will be my first major studio as well as first project that will be shot entirely English. Definitely, when you see this, you will not recognize that it's me directing it...But I'm so proud of it. I always love to have a new challenge”, he said.
He also talked about how Marvel contacted him out of the blue and how he made a pitch of 200 page pitch along with his wife who is also a film maker.
“Honestly, it was a great pitch. The moment we finished it I told Sarah that if we didn’t get this job, something was wrong”
He had high praises for the Marvel team involved in the project.
“It's been such a great experience — I'm learning a lot...I'm appreciating things more about my independent movies, and I'm appreciating things about the big machine. I can't compare Marvel to anything else, but it's a great machine. Those guys are geniuses.”
He also talked about how similar / dissimilar this project is going to be when compared with his previous projects and what fans can expect from the series.
“My movies are hard, serious and about big topics, and I feel strongly that Moon Knight is going to be like that — it's going to be entertainment but also heavy...At the same time, we're being so creative with the jokes and with the action. As I keep saying to my wife: I can't believe I'm funny in another language!”
Marvel’s Moon Knight is scheduled to release in the latter half of 2022 on Disney+.
